ILRI seeks to recruit a Veterinary Epidemiologist for ILRI’s evolving research addressing zoonotic diseases and other agriculture associated diseases at the interface of agro-ecosystems and human health and nutrition, with emphasis on integrating human, animal and environmental health in both analytical approaches and in interventions.

Key responsibilities:

• Be an active member of a multi-disciplinary team ILRI staff and CGIAR partners within a new CGIAR Program on improving human health and nutrition through agriculture research
• Generate research evidence on improving human health through understanding and managing livestock, and wildlife determinants of health
• Supervise and support collaborative Ecohealth/One Health research in a range of countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.
• Develop proposals to raise resources to support new research employing Ecohealth approaches and other research on the interface between livestock, wildlife and human health
• Be part of team of epidemiologists and contribute to other activities and research on food-borne disease and animal health
• Contribute generally to the development of livestock for poverty research in ILRI

Requirements:

• PhD in epidemiology, environmental science, public health or a related degree
• At least five years post-doctoral experience working on zoonoses/ ecohealth /public health research in developing countries
• Demonstrated quantitative epidemiological skills such as, field surveys, randomized controlled trials, risk factor studies, multi-level statistical modeling, spatial epidemiology
• Experience with sociology, economics, ecology nutrition, participatory methods, gender analysis, impact assessment an advantage
• Experience of working in multi- and trans-disciplinary teams
• Publishing 1-2 peer reviewed papers a year plus other communication products (working papers, research and policy briefs, training materials etc)
• Strong English language skills, both written and spoken (proficiency in other language is an advantage)
• Willingness and ability to travel frequently, sometimes to rural areas in developing countries
• Applicants whose qualifications/experience exceed the requirements may be eligible for recruitment to a more senior post with higher renumeration
