This post is being advertised as part of the ESPA Deltas (Assessing Health, Livelihoods, Ecosystem Services and Poverty Alleviation in Populous Deltas), which is a multi-disciplinary and multi-partner project which will be undertaking research on the relationship between poverty alleviation and ecosystem services in deltaic environments, with particular focus on coastal Bangladesh. The project is highly multidisciplinary and involves engineers, natural and social scientists, lawyers and policy analysts and a range of stakeholders. The overall goal is to build an integrated analytical framework for deltaic systems that is applied in Bangladesh and transferable to other populous deltas.

As a Research Fellow on the project, the applicant will be responsible for helping to develop the conceptualisation of the ecosystem services and relationship to poverty in the deltaic system and how it might evolve over the next 50 years. This will include understanding the natural and social dimensions of the delta and how they have changed in the 20th century and hence might change in the future. Elements in the analysis include morphodynamics, water quality and quantity, fisheries, agricultural production, mangroves and human health and well-being. This research will be conducted in a participatory manner with relevant stakeholders who will help to pose the critical policy questions, define future scenarios and contribute to the analysis and interpretation of the results. This will require integration across all the knowledge domains, and it is expected that system dynamic approaches will be employed to develop integrated models  The post holder will also be expected to present the project widely, including regularly disseminate findings by taking the lead in preparing publication materials for referred journals, presenting results at conferences, participating in workshops or exhibiting work at other appropriate events, and providing material for the project web site and the sponsors: ESPA.

The applicant should have PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in integrated assessment and model development, including developing code. Experience of cross-disciplinary research in natural and social sciences, stakeholder participatory processes and policy formulation is desirable.

The post will be responsible to the Project Leader, Professor Robert Nicholls, and will be based at the Highfield Campus of Southampton University.

Informal enquiries should be made to R.J.Nicholls@soton.ac.uk.
