POSITION SUMMARY

Project description

Bluetongue – a viral infection of ruminants transmitted by biting midges – was detected in France in 2015. This epizootic led to the implementation of restricted areas. Regulated movements of cattle in these areas aims to limit the spread of the disease but have a significant economic impact. By calibrating and using a previously developed epidemiologic model, this project aims to evaluate the epidemiological impact and economic cost of alternative scenarios of control of disease infection and spread.

This project will be co-directed by ANSES and the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD), in collaboration with researchers from the University of Liverpool, England. The doctoral student will be located in the Epidemiology unit of Anses – Laboratory of Lyon, France. Travels to England and CIRAD in Montpellier, France will be planned according to the project requirements.

Based on data from previous bluetongue epizootics, this project aims to model the overall cost of surveillance and control measures. These economic parameters will be integrated in a model combining surveillance and control actions given the close interactions between these two components. In a context of decreasing resources for animal health, this project will provide technical elements to the French platform for animal health surveillance about the improvement of the efficiency of surveillance and control systems in animal health.
