Hansen Forest cover change datasets available to project partners

These data have been derived from the Hansen et al Forest cover change datasets (see below for citation, website and source). The original data are provided as 30m resolution 10 degree tiles for presence or absence of Forest loss and forest gain between 2000 and 2013, and for percentage cover in 2000 of trees over 5m high.  The specific definitions are  as follows:

Tree canopy cover for year 2000 (treecover2000) Tree cover in the year 2000, defined as canopy closure for all vegetation taller than 5m in height. Encoded as a percentage per output grid cell, in the range 0–100.
Global forest cover loss 2000–2012 (loss) Forest loss during the period 2000–2012, defined as a stand-replacement disturbance, or a change from a forest to non-forest state. Encoded as either 1 (loss) or 0 (no loss).
Global forest cover gain 2000–2012 (gain)Forest gain during the period 2000–2012, defined as the inverse of loss, or a non-forest to forest change entirely within the study period. Encoded as either 1 (gain) or 0 (no gain).

These have been resampled to 300m  and 1 kilometre (0.002778, and 0083334 degrees respectively) for the EDENEXT/VMERGE region and 1km for the world and combined into single layers of percentage loss, gain, and treecover  for the EDENext coverage.  Note that these are not real % values as the input loss or gain dis defined as disturbance or complete loss/gain and are better defined as the % 30m pixels within the resampled pixel for which some loss or some gain has been recorded

In indication of the net change between 2000 and 2013 – a percentage net change index -   has also been calculated for each resampled pixel as % gain – %loss.

For the global data this net change index has been used to provide some idea of forest cover in 2013 calculated as (%treecover2000 + (%treecover2000*(net change/100))) assuming that the average amount lost or gained within a 30m pixel is 100% or  (%treecover2000 + (%treecover2000*(net change/200))) assuming that the average amount lost or gained within a 30m pixel is 50%
